Fees and Finance

What is the cost of the course?

  • For fee-funded trainees, the course fees are £8,750 in total for 'QTS only'.
  • If you decide to do the PGCE uplift the course fees are £9,250
  • For trainees on the salaried route, the QTS course fees are paid by the employing school.  As with the fee-funded route, the optional PGCE is an additional £500 and the trainee is responsible for meeting the cost.

How can I pay my fees?

  • Self finance: you can fund the tuition fees through private finance.
  • Tuition fee loan: you can apply to Student Finance England (SFE) for a loan to cover your course fees up to a maximum of £9,250.  You will need to meet the eligibility requirements for the loan, which are explained on the website
  • Salaried PGCE fees: Trainees on the salaried route are not eligible for any student loans. Therefore, should they opt to take the PGCE uplift this will need to be self-funded.

Can I get a DfE teacher training bursary or scholarship?

'High demand' secondary subjects attract a bursary or scholarship which trainees can apply for. Availability is dependent on the highest relevant academic award and the ITT subject. To receive a bursary or scholarship, trainees may need to be entitled to support under the Student Finance England criteria as either a home or EU student. Applicants with a degree from outside the UK will need to check their eligibility for a bursary. Get into Teaching will also provide guidance on equivalent qualifications. For details of the bursaries for 2024/25 please visit the DfE funding page.

How much will I get paid on the salaried route?

Salaried places are only available in a limited number of schools and subject areas. Please check your local hub page to find out about availability in your area.

The amount you will be paid on the salaried route will depend on the location of your employing school. The figures below are correct for 2023/24 but are subject to change on an annual basis.
